Historically, wildlife were fundamental to the survival of Métis communities. The herds of bison and elk roaming the prairies provided a vital source of food, clothing, and shelter. Horses were relied on for transportation, hunting and agricultural work. 

The buffalo played a crucial role in the Métis economy. Canada’s fur trade relied on buffalo hides as a valuable commodity. Métis hunters and traders became skilled in harvesting bison and trading hides with European settlers.

The Métis developed deep cultural ties to their animals, incorporating the buffalo, elk and horses into art, stories, and ceremonies. The bison became a distinct symbol of Métis identity, reflecting a deep connection to the land and an ability to thrive in challenging environments.
