Discover the fur trade at Métis Crossing, Victoria Settlement Provincial Historic Site and in a voyageur canoe on the scenic North Saskatchewan river.

At Métis Crossing encounter the Métis culture and its connection to the fur trade. Explore a fur trapping camp and discover how the Métis acted as guides, interpreters, clerks, canoe men, and fur packers.

Travel from Métis Crossing to Victoria Settlement by river. Led by a qualified canoe guide you’ll paddle a Voyageur canoe on the North Saskatchewan River.

At Victoria Settlement explore life at a Hudson’s Bay Company fur trading fort. You can try carrying bales of fur using a leather tumpline across your forehead and meet the people who lived at the Fort through their stories. Join historically costumed interpreters for an historic snack and discover will what life inside the Fort was like.

This pre-registered program allows you to experience aspects of fur trade life. With interactive activities hosted by Victoria Settlement Provincial Historic Site, a Voyageur canoe ride, and cultural experiences at Métis Crossing, this program is a favourite of visitors of all ages.

A tour of Métis Crossing to learn traditional knowledge and skills is followed by a one-hour voyageur canoe experience led by an experienced guide. At Victoria Settlement experience life at the fur trading fort.

Common Questions

Are there any age restrictions for Paddle into the Past?

Yes. Participants must be at least five years old. There is no upper age limit, but participants must be sufficiently mobile to climb in and out of the canoe.

Does Paddle into the Past operate rain or shine?

The safety of our staff and guests is of utmost importance. If the weather/river is deemed unsafe we will cancel the canoe portion of the experience.

What is the capacity of the Voyageur canoe?

The canoes can accommodate 8 paddlers plus a guide. Groups larger than eight will be split between two or more canoes.
