Hiking in the Smoky Lake Region

Smoky Lake Region is a great place to venture out on a summertime adventure! You’ll find many great spots to stop for a hike or walk to stretch your legs.

Alberta’s Iron Horse Trail

This multi-use trail is perfect for year-round adventures! Enjoy hiking, biking, quadding or horseback riding. With over 300 kilometres of trails and parks, this trail will take you down a historic route of northeast Alberta—through parkland, forest, wetlands and sand dunes.

Mons Lake

Featuring a sandy bottom clear water lake, Mons Lake is located just over an hour east of Edmonton. It offers a sandy beach, two playgrounds and some of the best Perch and Northern Pike fishing in the area. Many visitors enjoy the walking along the shore or stopping for a beachside picnic!

Smoky Lakes Pumpkin Park

They don’t’ call Smoky Lake the Pumpkin Capital of Alberta for nothing! Pumpkin Park features large concrete pumpkins that families from all over Alberta come to see. The park is considered the launch point for many planning an adventure down the famous Iron Horse Trail, so be sure to add it to your list of destinations this summer!

Programming at Métis Crossing

With our Signature Experiences, Métis Crossing offers visitors the opportunity to participate in guided cultural interpretive experiences, sharing the distinct Indigenous story of the Métis people in an interactive way. These Indigenous signature experiences change with the seasons. This Summer our General Admission visitors can also purchase Signature Experiences such as Walk in our Mocs, Paddle into the Past, and Meet the Métis.

Métis Crossing is also pleased to offer daily experiences included in the price of admission. These activities include historical exhibits, art exhibits and additional Métis cultural interpretive experiences. Stay tuned for more information coming about our Farmyard – complete with chicks. Our friendly goats, Annie and Franny and their friends, are not too far behind! We look forward to sharing the animals that would inhabit a historic Métis river lot farmyard with our visitors in 2021.

Métis Crossing is located 1.5 hours northeast of Edmonton and 10 minutes South of Smokey Lake on the Victoria Trail. We offer a full day activities and fun for all ages, making this the perfect road trip for those in the region.
